I find a deep sense of beauty in the deformed body of women by age and decrepitude. It’s an analogue feeling I experience when I study John Coplans’ body of art, where he explored and photographed his own body almost at the end of his life.
This feeling also reminds me of an experience Marguerite Duras, being a mature woman, had in a high public building elevator. Only this woman and an unknown man occupied it while descending to the street level. The man came near her and whispered in her ear something as “now that time and choices have devastated your face, now I find so much beauty in it”.
As soon as he pronounced those words, the elevator automatic sliding doors opened up, and the man ran through them. Maybe that’s the way age comes to us whispering to our ears abrupt, astonishing statements.
